Introduction to Exponents

Exponents are a mathematical way to express repeated multiplication of a number by itself. They help simplify large numbers and make calculations easier.

What is an Exponent?

An exponent consists of two parts:

– Base: The number being multiplied.

– Exponent (Power): The number of times the base is multiplied by itself.

Example

2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8

Here, 2 is the base, and 3 is the exponent, meaning 2 is multiplied by itself 3 times.

Terminology

– aⁿ → Read as ‘a raised to the power of n’

– 2² = 4 → ‘2 squared’ (because it represents a square)

– 2³ = 8 → ‘2 cubed’ (because it represents a cube)

Why Learn Exponents?

– Used in scientific notation, physics, and engineering

– Helps in computing large numbers efficiently

– Forms the basis of algebra and higher mathematics

Conclusion

Exponents are not just a mathematical concept but a real-world tool used in multiple fields. Whether you’re studying science, engineering, economics, or computing, understanding exponents will help you solve complex problems and make better predictions.
